Writes, rewrites, and/or edits technical documents such as technical procedure manuals, user manuals, programming manuals, service manuals, operational specifications, and related technical publications to communicate clearly and effectively technical specifications and instructions to a wide range of audiences. Acquires subject knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing the performance of production methods, referring to technical specifications, blueprints, engineering illustrations, and trade journals. Oversees preparation of illustrative materials, selecting drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts. Conducts quality reviews of materials.

  1. Translates complex data into user-friendly text for print and electronic publications, such as technical journals, user and training manuals, government proposals, websites, and podcasts.
  2. Gathers information through research, statistical reports, and interviews with technical staff.
  3. Develops cataloging systems, and maintains records, files, electronic media, and archiving of information for publications.
  4. Assists in preparing material for technical seminars and business forums. May be called upon to assist in technical or business presentations in such meetings as business or customer needs require.
  5. Selects or recommends the use of layouts, graphics, drawings, tables, exhibits, illustrations, charts, or storyboards to amplify or clarify publications objectives.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical writing and editing support for the USCIS Service Desk, and user self-help websites.

  • Compose and maintain educational articles based on input from Subject Matter Experts. Write about technical subjects for a non-technical audience.
  • Use word processing, database, graphic generation, and desktop publishing to draft materials/publications.
  • Take complicated subjects and instructions and rewrite them to be easily understood.  All work must meet the standards established in the Plain Writing Act of 2010.
  • Monitor libraries of educational material to identify items that require review. Coordinate review with the Subject Matter Experts.
  • Balance concurrent projects keeping appropriate priorities and deadlines without direct supervision.
  • Provide reporting as needed.
  • Take meeting minutes and distribute as needed.
  • User test software updates to ensure business needs are met.
  • Write user guides or manuals as needed.
  • Build effective working relationships.
  • Take meeting minutes and monitor as needed.
  • Provide feedback in a positive encouraging manner.
  • Create and maintain stylesheets and templates as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s with 2-5 years (or commensurate experience)
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s with 2-5 years (or commensurate experience)

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with ServiceNow Knowledge Management
  • Familiarity with HTML
