GovCIO Partners with VA to Expand Veterans Legacy Memorial by 5 Million Veterans’ Profiles

  • Press Release

November 2, 2023

Fairfax, Va. – GovCIO, a provider of advanced technology solutions and digital services for the federal government, has partnered with the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration (NCA) to add 5 million Veterans to the Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM).

The digital online memorialization platform built to share stories and memories of Veterans buried or interred worldwide grew from 4.8 million records in May 2023 to 9.8 million in October. The VA uploaded the records from 27 Department of Defense-managed military cemeteries, two U.S. Park Service National Cemeteries and from over 4,000 veterans laid to rest in private and other non-VA cemeteries in 87 countries.

VLM honors the service and sacrifice of millions interred at these military cemeteries. The digital platform allows family and friends to upload written tributes, photos, biographies, documents, and other information to Veterans’ memorial pages.

Since the program launched in 2019, over 72,000 memories have been added by family members, friends, researchers, and other users to the nearly 10 million profiles. VLM is expected to expand digital records to an estimated 30 million veterans leading back to the Revolutionary War and integrate records from the American Battle Monuments Commission.

From its inception, GovCIO has led the building, implementation, and maintenance of the VLM site for the NCA, ensuring survivors and family members have access to the platform to memorialize their Veterans.

“It’s an honor to work on a such an impactful program with the VA,” said Kristin Gill, GovCIO Sector President, Veteran and Enterprise Technology Services. “Through the leadership of GovCIO Senior Vice President Megha Chokshi, we are proud of the way GovCIO has been able to help tell the stories of so many Veterans who have shaped this country.”

Working with the VA’s Office of Information and Technology, GovCIO helped VLM implement features to include a simpler and faster search for users to find their Veterans and a new Personal Achievements milestone to celebrate those non-military special occasions in a Veteran’s life.

“Having a number of my relatives interred at VA national cemeteries, I am extremely proud that the VA continues to entrust GovCIO with this important mission,” said Jim Brabston, GovCIO CEO. “Maintaining the VLM customer experience is a top priority, and we hope to continue to develop the program that will allow families and friends to honor their Veterans for years to come.”
