Managing & Protecting Large Scale Network Architectures at VA
GovCIO works with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs to safeguard and oversee their operational status and cybersecurity position. The collaboration among our Connectivity and Collaboration Services (CCS) Network Engineering Team, Infrastructure Support Services (ISS) Team, and Network Edge Operations (NEO) Team are responsible for our efforts in defending, managing, and monitoring.

Connectivity and Collaboration Services (CCS) Network Engineering Team
This team is responsible for designing, aiding in troubleshooting, and testing new technologies for the VA Wide Area Network (WAN). The VA WAN relies on American Telephone & Telegraph (AT&T) and Lumen for transporting data between facilities, to data centers, to the cloud, and to the Internet.
Current projects include:
- Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6)
- Software Defined Wide Area Network (SDWAN)
- Packet capture
- WAN Evaluations
Infrastructure Support Services (ISS) Team
Ensuring continuous 24/7 monitoring of vital services for uninterrupted availability, ISS oversees various technologies such as Server/Desktop deployments, vulnerability assessment, Active Directory, Group Policy, Citrix/Terminal Server Farms, McAfee Exchange Online Protection (ePO), File/Print, CommVault Backup Disaster Recovery (DR), ArcServer Replication, VMware, Microsoft System Center Configuration Management (SCCM), Secure Socket Layer (SSL) Certificates, American Power Conversion (APC) StructureWare, and critical service Fail-over initiatives. ISS operates around the clock.

- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Deployment within the Gateways
- Increased Disaster Recovery Measurements and Development
Network Edge Operations (NEO) Team
A 24/7/365 operations team, NEO is assigned to monitor and oversee the Trusted Internet Connection (TIC) Gateways of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). These TIC Gateways consist of routers, switches, firewalls, and security appliances/services, facilitating external connectivity to and from the VA Enterprise.
