How Tristan Landed a Role at GovCIO
Transitioning from military service to a civilian career can be challenging, but for Tristan Hamilton, the journey was made smoother through GovCIO’s Veteran Resume Review Event. After serving four years as an Infantry Officer, including time with the 1st Battalion 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Tristan transitioned to the Signal Corps, where he worked as a Battalion Signal Officer. When he began his job search, he was looking for an opportunity to apply his leadership, problem-solving, and technical skills to a meaningful mission.
Attending GovCIO’s Resume Review event in 2024 provided Tristan with valuable insights on refining his resume, translating military experience into civilian job qualifications, and making meaningful connections with recruiters. Now, as a Customer Support Administrator at GovCIO, he is using his military background to contribute to impactful government IT solutions.

How did attending the GovCIO Veteran Resume Review event help you in your job search?
The event validated some of my existing choices in resume setup, and offered specific, actionable recommendations for improving the formatting and content to meet industry best practices. The person who reviewed my resume also offered tailored tips for actually getting a response to my resume!
What specific feedback from the event helped you improve your job applications, and how did it impact your job search?
I took away a more tailored order of my experience and certifications to better fit the roles I was applying for. I believe it really helped with getting more callbacks.
What skills from your military experience have been the most valuable in your current role?
While some technical familiarity helps, the ability to work with people in difficult situations and problem-solve always wins out as the most useful skill.
How does GovCIO support Veterans in their career transitions?
The resume review session was extremely helpful—I really appreciate employees taking time out of their day to help Veterans navigate the difficult transition out of the military. In addition, many employees are Veterans themselves and can empathize with the situation.
What excites you most about your work at GovCIO?
The ability to continue contributing to an important mission while working with a great team! I also love the opportunity to tackle new challenges every day.
