By valuing their unique perspectives and recognizing the challenges of frequent relocations, we foster a supportive environment that provides stable careers, flexible roles, and tailored resources to help military families thrive.

Spotlight on Christina Krukar

Meet Christina Krukar, Portfolio Director at GovCIO, whose journey exemplifies the strength and perspective military spouses bring to our mission. With extensive experience and a commitment to excellence, Christina plays a key role in advancing our projects.

Join us as we discuss her journey as a military spouse and the value she brings to GovCIO.

How has being a military spouse influenced your career and personal growth?

Being a military spouse has truly shaped my career and personal growth in meaningful ways. The constant transitions have taught me resilience and adaptability, skills that have become invaluable in both my professional life and daily challenges. Each move has pushed me to step out of my comfort zone, forge new connections, and embrace opportunities I might have otherwise overlooked.

I’ve also gained a deeper appreciation for teamwork and community through my interactions with fellow military families. Hearing their stories and sharing experiences has inspired me to advocate for military spouses and veterans in the workplace.

Overall, my journey as a military spouse has not just enhanced my career; it’s enriched my perspective on life and fueled my passion for supporting others in similar situations. I’m grateful for the lessons and the community that have come from this experience.

How has GovCIO supported you as a military spouse?

GovCIO has been incredibly supportive of me as a military spouse. During times of relocation, their flexibility has allowed me to maintain my role, regardless of where I am located. I truly appreciate the resources and programs that GovCIO offers to assist veterans and their families.

How does GovCIO demonstrate its commitment to active military and veterans?

GovCIO is dedicated to supporting both active-duty military personnel and veterans as they transition to civilian careers. We engage in community philanthropy through initiatives such as volunteering at Boulder Crest in Virginia, a facility focused on assisting veterans with trauma, and sponsoring the Washington Capitals’ “Star Spangled Baby Shower” for expectant military mothers through Operation Homefront.

GovCIO has established a Veterans of GovCIO Employee Resource Group (ERG) that fosters a supportive community for veterans, providing mentorship, networking, and professional development opportunities, along with community service initiatives.

Additionally, we host quarterly virtual Veteran Resume Review events, offering personalized feedback to help transitioning military members and spouses become strong candidates in their job search. We are also proud to have been recognized by Newsweek magazine as one of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Veterans for 2024-2025.

What advice would you offer to military spouses balancing career aspirations with the demands of military life?

As a military spouse balancing career aspirations with the demands of military life, my advice would be to stay adaptable and proactive. Embrace the unique experiences that come with this lifestyle, and leverage them to enhance your skill set.

Networking is crucial! Connect with other military spouses and professionals who understand your journey. Seek out resources and programs designed specifically for military families, and don’t hesitate to advocate for yourself in the workplace.

Finally, prioritize self-care and be patient with yourself; it’s important to find a balance that works for you. Remember, your resilience is a strength that will serve you well in your career and beyond.

What traditions or activities do you participate in during November to honor National Veteran and Military Families Month?

Every Veterans Day, we honor my husband’s military service by gathering for a meal with my sister-in-law, who also served in the Army. Although our young children may not fully grasp the significance of this day, I want to instill in them an appreciation for their dad’s service and sacrifice from an early age.
