Meet Justin Ellery, a dedicated Project Manager at GovCIO whose commitment to service spans both military and civilian life. With four years in the U.S. Marine Corps and 15 years in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, Justin brings a wealth of experience and leadership. Since transitioning to the civilian workforce in 2009, he’s continued to serve, now through mission-driven work that supports our nation’s critical technology and defense efforts.

How does GovCIO support Veterans in their professional growth and career journeys?

GovCIO is very military-friendly. They actively seek out Veterans and recognize the value we bring to the workforce. I’ve seen firsthand how they invest in Veteran talent and help us grow.

Through programs like Hiring Our Heroes and internal resume review initiatives, GovCIO creates intentional pathways for Veterans to translate their military experience into meaningful civilian careers.

What message would you share with other Veterans about why GovCIO is a great place to work and grow after military service?

I’m still a military reservist, and GovCIO has always supported my military obligations. Anytime I needed to take military leave, they are flexible and respectful. It’s rare to find an employer that not only accommodates service but appreciates it. With flexible work options and a deep respect for mission-focused professionals, GovCIO empowers Veterans to thrive.

How did you decide what career path to pursue after leaving the military?

After leaving active duty, I earned my degree from the University of South Florida. The combination of my education and military experience helped guide me toward the IT field. Project management felt like a natural fit given my background in leadership, operations, and coordination.

What advice would you give to service members about networking as they prepare to transition to civilian employment?

Start early – at least a year before you separate. Reach out to people you served with who have already made the transition. Learn from their experience and ask what they would do differently.

Your network can open doors and guide you toward civilian roles that match your skills and values.

What advice would you share about navigating corporate culture compared to the structured environment of the military?

You have to leave the military jargon behind. Learn how to communicate in a way that fits your new environment and observe how things are done on the civilian side. Adaptability is one of the most valuable skills we bring.

GovCIO understands that moving from a highly structured military environment into corporate life comes with a learning curve. That’s why they provide resources to help Veterans navigate this shift- from understanding civilian workflows to translating your skills into language that resonates with hiring managers.

GovCIO has partnered with the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration to introduce a new Living Veteran feature to the Veterans Legacy Memorial.
